Session 1A32: e-Marketplace Utilization: How Online Trade Exchanges Will Transform the Manufacturing Industry

The explosion of online trade exchanges for virtually every industry--automotive, chemical, trucking, aviation, telecommunications, plastics and a host of others--bears out the sky-high expectations for these global electronic marketplaces to bring radical new efficiencies to B2B bidding, negotiating, purchasing and selling, particularly for hub customers who wield the clout to require their suppliers to transact through these sites. Benefits to hub customers as market makers include the ability to leverage every transaction, ultra-efficient price comparison, supplier selection and negotiation, increased power to obtain supplier discounts, and radically more efficient purchasing. Suppliers, on the other hand, must balance the increased exposure and opportunities these sites afford against their legitimate business interests, the risk of greater price and margin pressures due to increased competition and price visibility, and how to retain the flexibility to differentiate pricing between customers. In this session, leading OEM's and suppliers will share their visions, objectives and challenges resulting from their participation in the revolutionary new e-Marketplace arena.

Session 1P11: PDM/ERP Integration: Streamlining the Enterprise for Flexible and Adaptable Processes

To fully reap the benefits of B2B e-Commerce and supply-chain management strategies, tight integration of information technologies from design through manufacturing and production management to enterprise business systems is critical. However, obstacles to integration abound, beginning with the interoperability barriers that currently exist between different brands of system, even when these are designed for the same discipline such as mechanical engineering. Moreover, much essential business and product data is held in legacy systems that are difficult if not impossible to integrate into the new e-infrastructure. For users, the challenge is to create new systems and work processes that yield step-function increases in efficiency, through-put and competitiveness, and do not simply automate existing inefficient exchanges of (often inaccurate) data. This session will reveal what industry leaders are doing to re-engineer and streamline their companies' information systems and work processes to enable them to compete in emerging e-Business-driven markets.
