Dr. Richard Sun

Dr. Richard Sun is the Senior Manager of the Aero/Thermal Center of Competence and Core CFD Group at the DaimlerChrysler Corporation in Auburn Hills, Michigan. In his current position, he is responsible for establishing vehicle development and evaluation (including digital simulation and experiment testing) best practices as related to aero/thermal systems. Dr. Sun was recently appointed Chairman of the Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) and Computer Aided Optimization (CAO) Technology within the Vehicle Engineering Organization of DaimlerChrysler North America. He has over twenty years experience in developing and implementing CFD processes (including the Digital Wind Tunnel project) for the auto industry with special emphasis in vehicle aerodynamics, underhood/body thermal management systems and powertrain systems.

Dr. Sun was also the chairman of the management committee for the SuperComputer Automotive Applications Partnership (SCAAP) within the Unites States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR) where he led the cooperative efforts between the auto industry, the US Department of Energy National Labs and commercial software developers to incorporate advanced physicals into the commonly used CFD codes. He has authored numerous papers for SAE and he is a frequent speaker at Michigan State University CFD course and other international events.

Dr. Sun received his PhD degree in Fluid Mechanics from the Imperial College of Science and Technology at London, England in 1982. He also earned a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the National Taiwan University at Taipei and a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from National Cheng Kung University at Tainan in Taiwan.
