Derrel Shaffer is the Senior Industry Marketing Manager for Industrial Facility & Plant at Leica Geosystems HDS. His experience in industrial engineering spans over 24 years. During this time he served in a variety of engineering and management roles and with many different design disciplines. Derrel has also worked for both large and small engineering, fabrication, and construction companies, which gives him an understanding of the budgetary and resource constraints that apply to each. Prior to joining Leica Geosystems HDS, Shaffer was employed at Paul Krebs and Associates, Harbert Construction, Plant City Steel Company, Rust Engineering Company, Maxson Engineering, Raytheon Engineers & Constructors, Washington Group, and BE&K Engineering Company.

Since 1996 Shaffer has managed and executed forty-five laser scanning projects in a wide range of industries, which include architectural, automotive, pulp & paper, chemical, foods & beverage, government, power, and nuclear. The following is a partial list of his laser scanning client's: Mobile Oil, Southern Company, DuPont, International Paper, Kraft Foods, Ford Motor Company, Corning Fiber optics, Westinghouse Government, MeadWestvaco, GE Power Systems, Anheuser-Bush, etc. Shaffer is constantly exploring new and nontraditional ways to increase efficiency and utilization of laser scanning technology. In 1998 Shaffer was one of the first to conceive and execute projects where design was done directly in the unprocessed digital point cloud.

Shaffer is a registered Professional Structural Engineer in the state of Alabama (No. 17096), former associate member of the American Institute of Steel Construction, and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Structural Engineering from The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB).
